SOCIAL PROGRAM

After the Bad Data Lecture on Friday, we will have dinner in Het Goudblommeke in Papier, a typical Brussels ‘estaminet’. This dinner is at participants’ own expense, and you can enroll for it with your final registration and payment. Dinner costs 22 euros, which includes a drink, a main course (you’ll be able to chose later from a list of options), and coffee or tea afterwards.

The restaurant is a real Brussels landmark, both due to its historical interior and due to its history. It served as a main meeting place for literary authors (e.g. the modernist novelist Louis Paul Boon and the Dutch COBRA poet Lucebert), as well as artists such as surrealist painter René Magritte, expressionist painter Karel Appel, and the local Georges Remi, better known as Hergé, the creator of the Tintin comics.

After dinner, we will have a free guided tour around the city center of Brussels, for anyone who is interested. Our excellent guide, Senna Rees, himself a philologist by training, will take us through the greater and smaller highlights, and regale us with amusing stories on the city’s past.
